1. The Port of Hamburg
The Port of Hamburg, the so called “Doorway to the world” with seagoing vessels form all over the world is the second-biggest European port. Experience the smell of freedom and faraway countries at the cruiser terminal, visit the historic Storehouse City and the “Landungsbrücken”, the piers, during a barge tour and stroll down the famous Fish Market, where you find the real Hanseatic “Originals” and revellers from the Reeperbahn. Popular for early birds, bargain hunters and tourists is the brunch in the historic fish auction hall with jazz, skiffle or country music.
2. St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn
Alternative cultural scene, strip shows and sex shops and the FC St. Pauli Football Club represents this famous district of the town. Yet in the 17th century nightclubs and entertainment were established here and later on a very multicultural population due to the nearby harbour. Today many young people discover the district of “sin” and numerous Bars, Pubs; discothèque and music clubs have established here, where once the Beatles started their career in the grand Star Club, when the Reeperbahn became the Mecca of rock music in the 1960’s. Nearby you enjoy as well several music halls and theatres. Enjoy the “Great Freedom”, well-known street at Reeperbahn.
3. “Michel” Church
The biggest German church clock of St. Michaelis church is not only the most important baroque church building in northern Germany but also Hamburg’s most famous landmark! Its tower, the “Michel” is 132 metres high. The spire offers a wonderful view from his viewing platform over the harbour and downtown. You can reach the spire by stairs or elevator. A special event represents the tower at night and the “Turmblasen” (tower music) at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.
4. “Tierpark Hagenbeck”
Tierpark Hagenbeck is the famous zoo of the Hamburg. It affords a very generous and modern garden with big outdoor enclosures and a marvellous park area. Animals from all continents and the tropic aquarium house are fascinating children and adults alike. Animals are clustered according to their natural living conditions. Highlight is the adventure aquarium with life out of the deepest tropical oceans and his enormous shark aquarium deployed over 8000 m².
5. Jungfernstieg
The Jungfernstieg is a splendid boulevard next to the Alster. It connects the most renowned places of interest with the paradise of shopping streets and malls. It is one of the most beautiful and exquisite shopping streets in the world. The most traditional building at Jungfernstieg is the Alster-Pavillon with a phenomenal view over the Alster, existing since 1799.
During the day, you are invited to discover all the splendour and beauty of the Hanseatic Centre with its luxury boutiques. At night you can enjoy and relax in the cosmopolitan ambiance in numerous cafes and bars.
6. Around the “Alster”
There's a maritime flavour in this city: The big lake in the heart of the city is a paradise for all yachtsmen and paddlers and a popular meeting point for recreation.
Enjoy one of the Alster round trips or rent yourself a little skiff, kayak or jolly boat. The Außenalster is a perfect area for jogging and with it’s 7.400 m long Alsterrunde, one of the best paths in Hamburg. Close to the Alster many cafés and bars invite for a coffee or a Alsterwasser, genius drink for hot summer day, combining bear and lemonade. The so-called "Alsterchairs” are waiting for those who love sunbathing and reading.
7. The “Speicherstadt”
The Speicherstadt is Hamburg's freeport area, built at the end of the 19th Century depicts lines of brick-built warehouses up to seven stories high. These warehouses were used for the storage of tobacco, coffee, rum and spice as well as high value products as electronic or oriental carpets. It is the worldwide biggest connected storehouse complex and impresses with it’s romantic gothic-flavoured scenery, bizarre gables and little towers. It is especially impressive after dawn.
8. Hamburger Rathaus
“Hamburger Rathaus” is Hamburg's City Hall. Like the City of Bremen and Berlin, Hamburg is a city-state. The government and parliament have their common seat in the Rathaus or City Hall. The City Hall of Hamburg is an impressive building, build in 1897. Behind the building, you will find a courtyard with the famous Hygieia-fontain dedicated to the greek goddess of health. The façade is in the Neo-Renaissance style and was restored in the 19th Century, coming up with precious materials; Inside you marvel historic paintings and find much information about Hamburg history. The big market-square in front of the City Hall is a constant venue for big events in Hamburg.
9. Planten en Bloomen
Planten en Bloomen represents the “Green Hanseatic City”. Visit the “Alten Wallanlagen”, the old Town Ramparts, and the famous “Planten un Blomen”. You will find both in the middle of the City of Hamburg building a great leisure area with a botanical garden, tropical greenhouse and the biggest Japanese garden in Europe. A real highlight depicts the illuminated fountain at the park lake and in summer time, habitants and tourists marvel at the illuminated fountain concerts.
10. Hafencity and Elbphilharmonie
The project of the new Harbour City with and the highlight within, the philharmonic orchestra. “Elbphilharmonie”, is most impressive and will change the panorama of Hamburg. Many people visit the HafenCity to get an impression of the new quarter. Hamburg downtown will expand about 40% and the project will be finished by 2025. The Elbphilharmonie will become a new landmark for Hamburg with one of the best concert halls in the world. The architecture is stunning, as the concert hall is built on the roof of an old storehouse in the middle of vivid harbour scenery.
